Can you handle the heat? - Build a gamified aptitude test for remote controllers
BHP Integrated Remote Operations Centers (IROC) control our operations & support technology across all Assets. The role of a Remote Controller is to meet multiple Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), whilst making operational decisions at high frequency, directly affecting the productivity of our Assets. Conditions can change rapidly due to various operational delays such as maintenance events, system breakdowns or weather conditions; and the Remote Controller is expected to process the information displayed on multiple screens and optimise operational productivity. The performance of each Remote Controller can vary significantly based on their optimisation approach.
BHP currently has no satisfying assessment tool to predict the performance of a job applicant or Remote Controller in training. Can you find a way to assess the suitability of a Remote Controller for the job or improve the performance of current controllers?
Key qualities in top performers are the ability to:
- Identify constraints and manage them quickly to achieve KPIs
- Communicate efficiently and empathetically with staff on site.
- Be decisive when faced with ambiguity
BHP use many standard technologies, components and configurations to maintain safe operations, maximise productivity and reduce operating cost. BHP has deployed systems across its Assets to orchestrate the movement of the mobile fleets (Haul trucks).
The role of a Remote Controller is to interact with these systems to manage complex scenarios. They are subject matter specialists, required to make informed decisions based on available data at a point in time. These decisions are made to execute the operational targets and meet KPIs to maintain fleet optimisation.
What to build?
There is no right or wrong solution, we are looking for creative ideas and quality execution.
We will provide contextual information as well as ongoing mentoring by subject matter experts.
The context pack is released in our slack channel and in the forum (only accessible for registered participants)
