Risky Business! Develop a Risk Assessment Platform
Safety challenge: develop a tool to assess risk.
A Field Level Risk Assessment (FLRA) is a form completed by mine personnel to identify risks associated with a certain job. The challenge is to develop a scalable digital platform to replace the paper-based FLRAs.
All Barrick employees must fill out an FLRA prior to a task on a mine site. They are then collected in a bin for supervisors to review and archive. The two biggest issues at hand are: 1- Reported cases of missing/lost forms 2- FLRA formats that are non-conducive to proper risk assessments. Digitizing FLRAs is a good way to address these issues and also an opportunity to enhance its main function. A digital platform, whether web- or application-based, is a medium that could allow supervisors to extract relevant data and to build a comprehensive database of risky tasks and locations on site. Building a platform that incentivizes detailed risk assessments and allows for easy data extraction is an occasion to address hazards like never before. The challenge is to develop a scalable digital platform to replace the paper-based FLRAs.
Potential Areas to consider:
•How can you build a user-friendly interface that encourages/incentivizes personnel to conduct comprehensive assessments of their workplace?
•How can risk assessment data be extracted in a meaningful way?
•How could this application be made readily available during throughout the day?
•How would a comment sections be integrated into the application (e.g. speech-text recognition software)? Could comment sections be eliminated completely?.
•A few already filled out FLRA cards may be provided, as required.
•Otherwise no other data is currently available.
